Curtis High School commands a stunning view of New York Harbor; the reason that the Board of Education's legendary Superintendent of Building's, C.B. J. Snyder, selected it. Begun in 1902 shortly after NYC's consolidation as the site for Staten Island's first public high school building, the first of five buildings was constructed of brick and limestone, dominated by a square turreted tower inspired by English medieval models. It's subsequent additions, also designed by C. B. J. Snyder in 1919, were completed in 1919 and 1925, employing the same materials, neo gothic ornaments, and the English chapel's Perpendicular Gothic style to harmonize beautifully with the original building. Curtis High School's facade was designated a Historic Landmark Building in 1977. The school recently underwent a six year restoration to restore it to it's original brilliance , allowing it to remain true to it renowned builder's vision.   --Staten Island Chamber of Commerce 48th Annual Building Awards Luncheon
